Established during the mid 1990's, Wilderness Mushroom Company began very small with a close knit group of friends wildcrafting primarily California's regional Fall, Winter, and early Spring mushrooms that experienced some wonderful, healthy, and long productive mushroom years that satisfied our companies needs at the time. However, in the early 2000's exploration and expansion into further bioregions of the Pacific Northwest, intermountain West, and Canada revealed that mushrooms have differing times throughout the year when they grow depending on latitude or altitude and once the dots were connected a year around business was formed. Like a mycelial network slowly branching out we are now comprised of passionate foragers and mushroom farmers of all races, ages, and gender, spanning the west coast from Los Angeles to Alaska and east to around the Rocky Mountains continental divide that wildcraft or forage medicinal gourmet mushrooms and farm or grow both exotic and native organic certified species. Our business model or ethics is rooted in "sustainability" meaning treading lightly, gathering mushrooms with great sensitivity to all ecosystems, and the health of individual species and the forest communities being taken very seriously. This entails "leaving no trace" of disturbance when carefully harvesting the mushrooms by either cutting the mushroom at the base, or with King Boletes/Porcini and Matsutake, wiggling and pulling out very carefully and then covering the indented earth back up thus limiting the impacts to the underground mycelium. Wilderness Mushroom Company also respects all laws and regulations around collection of species and abides to all permits and regulatory agencies both State and Federal.
